2023 Video Game Release Dates: The PlayStation, Xbox and Switch Games To Follow

115

The gaming industry has had a difficult couple of years. Big games, like Starfield and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, had to be delayed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic’s disruption of development teams. But because we have so much to look forward to in 2023, the losses of 2021 and 2022 are actually wins. This list of important 2023 releases already has a tonne of titles on it, therefore for the time being we have just listed games that will be released in the first half of the year. As the year goes on and we get more precise dates, more will be added.

The year 2022 was a good one for video games. In addition to the long-awaited God of War sequel and Elden Ring, we also received an open-world Pokemon game. The games in 2023 may not reach those same heights, but the odds are unquestionably in our favour. Just let’s hope Zelda doesn’t get postponed once again.

Here are all the major 2023 games for the PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.

Fire Emblem Engage (Switch)

A huge one, and I do mean large, is the first significant video game of 2023. Games in the Fire Emblem series are enormous. Engage is the sequel to Three Houses from 2019, a hefty RPG that takes over 100 hours to complete. Engage will ideally match Three Houses’ scope and magic, both of which received high praise from critics. Characters throughout Engage’s lengthy history are included, allowing newcomers to at least have a good introduction to Super Smash Bros. characters like Marth, Corrin, and Blyeth.

Forspoken (PS5, PC)

The anticipation for Forspoken should be qualified by the asterisk that the game’s demo received a mix of positive and negative comments. But simply because it’s a new Square Enix IP, it’s worth paying attention to, if not cheering for. That has to mean something in a sector where sequels and spinoffs are commonplace.

A fish out of water story, Forspoken follows New Yorker Frey Holland as he stumbles into the mythical world of Athia. classic material. It’s clear from watching the real-time action in action that many of the same folks that worked on Final Fantasy 15 designed this game. Hope you succeed, Frey, and good luck. When Forspoken launches, it will only be available on the PS5 and PC for at least two years.

Hogwarts Legacy (PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC)

The magic maxim is that the third time’s the charm, so hopefully Hogwarts Legacy follows it. This role-playing game, which takes place in the Harry Potter universe, was initially teased in 2020 with a 2021 release date. Then, it was postponed until 2022. But it didn’t work out, and Hogwart’s Legacy was postponed once more last year. The most recent release was on February 10. Hogwart’s Legacy, a sizable open-world game set in the most renowned school of witchcraft and wizardry, is an intriguing idea. It is set about 100 years before The Boy Who Lived and He Who Shall Not Be Named.

Games based on blockbuster franchises can be hit or miss. Hopefully all the delays are a sign that this promising idea has been given the love and nurturing it needs to succeed.

Note: The PS4 and Xbox One versions of Hogwarts Legacy will be released on April 4, with a Switch port coming on July 25.

Horizon Call of the Mountain (PSVR 2)

Making VR a reality is one of Sony’s objectives for 2023. Horizon Call of the Mountain, a virtual reality offshoot to Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West, is being created by Guerilla Games as part of that effort. Instead of playing as Aloy, you’ll be Ryas, a member of the Shadow Carja tribe that was extensively featured in Zero Dawn, and you’ll be using his hunting bow. Call of the Mountain, a VR game, appears to have less open-world exploring and more thrilling climbing, exploration, and bow-based fighting. On February 22, it debuts together with the PlayStation VR2 headset.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC)

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a fresh IP with some history: Team Ninja, the team behind the critically acclaimed Ninja Gaiden and the much more critically praised Nioh franchise, created it. There are many amazing (and hideous) creatures to defeat in Wo Long, which is set in the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history, about 220 AD. This appears to have drawn inspiration from Dark Souls, like Nioh did, so expect to die. A lot.

Resident Evil 4 Remake (PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC)

Capcom is back at it after the huge success of the Resident Evil 2 Remake. The most beloved game in the legendary franchise is Resident Evil 4, which was first published in 2005 as a GameCube exclusive (imagine that). Resident Evil 4 has been repeatedly ported and remastered by Capcom as a result of the hoopla surrounding it. It’s a good thing you don’t have RE4 weariness because it’s now receiving a genuine remake.

If Capcom can achieve for Resident Evil 4 what it did for Resident Evil 2, it will undoubtedly be a must-play if you’ve never played it.

Crime Boss: Rockay City (PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S)

Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently being worked on by Rockstar, but it won’t be released for years. While you wait for the next major open-world crime spree, 505 Games’ Crime Boss: Rockay City may help replace the GTA-shaped hole in your heart.

First-person game Crime Boss: Rockay City, which is about Florida turf conflicts in the 1990s, may be played alone or with groups. The game’s celebrity-heavy cast is its most captivating aspect. Travis Barker, played by Kill Bill’s Michael Madson, has a supporting cast that includes Vanilla Ice, Chuck Norris, Kim Basinger, Danny Trejo, and Chuck Norris.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Switch)

Not much needs to be said here. The Legend of Zelda is one of gaming’s most renowned franchises, and 2017’s Breath of the Wild is incontestably one of the greatest games ever. Nintendo has a habit of delaying Zelda games — Tears of the Kingdom has already been delayed once — so hopefully the May 12 date sticks.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League (PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC)

The Suicide Squad now has the perfect opportunity to upstage the good guys… and then murder them since last year’s Gotham Knights was unable to emerge from Batman’s Arkham City-sized shadow.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is the genuine spiritual successor to Batman’s Arkham trilogy, even though Gotham Knights was somewhat of a sequel. The same firm that created the Arkham trilogy, Rocksteady, is responsible for its creation. You may play as four Suicide Squad members in the game: Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark. It also has Kevin Conroy’s final Batman performance on record.

Street Fighter 6 (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC)

Since 2016, Street Fighter 6 is the series’ first significant new release. As you may anticipate, the aesthetics will be significantly better. There will be five other characters, and perhaps more, too. A single-player adventure option and in-game commentary are other recent improvements that esports fans will like. Although those bonuses are good, the Street Fighter series is really known for its robust combat system, which is sophisticated enough for serious fighters to spend years perfecting but being easy enough for beginners to enjoy. This ought to be a hit if that still functions.

Diablo 4 (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC)

Overwatch was upgraded last year, and now it’s Diablo’s turn to get boosted. The long-running action RPG brand from Activision Blizzard, Diablo 4, couldn’t have come at a better time. Since its announcement in 2019, or a whole pandemic ago, fans have eagerly anticipating the release of Diablo 4.

Final Fantasy 16 (PS5)

Being completely honest with you, despite many viewings of the numerous Final Fantasy 16 trailers, I still have no idea what the game is about. Six distinct nations are engaged in conflict, and colossal summons like Ifrit are somehow implicated. Although I can’t be certain, I believe that the fact that Final Fantasy is coming to a new console generation will be enough to make the game a significant cultural phenomenon. (Until the end of the year, it will only be available on the PS5) It may possibly be the first of two significant Final Fantasy releases this year; the sequel to Final Fantasy 7 Remake might come out around the holidays, although that’s unlikely.

Hollow Knight: Silksong (Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC)

Without “Metroid” or “Vania” in its name, Hollow Knight, which debuted in 2017, was hailed as one of the finest Metroidvania games. Independent game developer Team Cherry wants to start over in 2023. Although you’ll play as a different character here—a boss you faced in the first game—the basic gameplay remains the same. In order to succeed, one must first explore, engage in a number of guy fights, become disoriented, and then explore some more. For my part, I’m prepared.

Microsoft stated that Hollow Knight: Silksong will be released within a year of the announcement date, which was June 12, 2022.

Redfall (PC, Xbox Series X|S)

Redfall has a Deathloop and The Last of Us-like aesthetic. The story is set in the fictional Massachusetts town of Redfall, which was doing just well until a horde of vampires overran it and shut it off from the outside world. You’ll explore a village filled with artefacts from the past, just as in The Last of Us, but the game seems to have a more whimsical, Deathloop-like vibe. That makes sense because the company behind Redfall, Arkane Austin, is a sibling company to Arkane Lyon, the folks behind Deathloop.

Forza Motorsport (Xbox Series X|S, PC)

In 2023, we return to Forza’s driving-sim roots after bringing the open-world exploration of the driving series to the Xbox Series X|S with Forza Horizon. By substituting confined tracks for open highways, this game will be more akin to Gran Turismo 7, which was released on the PS5 last year. A little more polish and professionalism would be nice. Whatever their taste, Forza games can always be on on to deliver some mouthwatering drives, and Forza Motorsport for 2023 is expected to be the most attractive one yet.

Starfield (Xbox Series X|S, PC)

One of the major delays in 2022 was Starfield, which was similar to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It was postponed until the “first half of 2023” from its original Nov. 11 release date. It’s better that way: The same Bethesda company that created Skyrim and Fallout 4 also created the game Starfield.

Starfield may become a game that people play for many years to come if it is executed well. There are about 1,000 planets to discover, so a few more polishings will make a big difference. The most anticipated video game of 2023 is Tears of the Kingdom, while Starfield could be its most ambitious title.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Luna)

With Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Ubisoft is employing a novel strategy. After years of adopting the “more is better” philosophy, Ubisoft is now attempting the “less is more” philosophy. The publisher touted that Assassin’s Creed Mirage is a “shorter, more narrative-driven game than prior entries in the series.” To me, that sounds good. Basim, who had a supporting part in Valhalla, starred in Mirage, which takes place in Baghdad in the ninth century, a few decades before that game.

Lies of P (PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S)

The game Lies of P sounds very terrifying: it’s a 2023 Dark Souls version of the Pinocchio narrative. In order to accomplish your objective of finding Mr. Geppetto, you must lie your way through a challenging metropolis, according to the game’s premise. Like’s all well and good, but based on the teaser for Lies of P, it appears that the main attraction will be battle.

Spider-Man 2 (PS5)

The 2018 Spider-Man wasn’t as good as I had anticipated it would be: However, it wasn’t Batman: Arkham City. But almost everyone else adored it: With an 8.7 out of 10 on Metacritic, Spider-Man has surpassed Arkham City to become the most popular superhero game ever. Peter Parker and Miles Morales, who both appeared in Miles Morales’ own 2020 spin-off, will both appear in Spider-Man 2, which will debut in late 2023 exclusively for the PS5. Because there is a wild Venom out there, the Spider-Men will need to combine their abilities in this game.
