How to play PS5 games on PS4

Many players are surprised to learn that there is a method to play PS5 games on PS4, so if you’ve ever wondered, you can. Anyone who wishes to share the experience with a buddy who hasn’t purchased a PS5 or who has their PS5 setup in a separate room will find it helpful to be able to play next-gen games on a last-gen system.

For whatever reason, knowing how to access and play your PS5 games from a PS4 is helpful, and we’re here to assist. You cannot just take your PS5 game and play it on a PS4 as Sony does not provide forwards compatibility, unlike the Xbox Smart Delivery service on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

There are two essential ways to play PS5 games on a PS4, but don’t anticipate them to perform as well as they would on Sony’s most recent hardware. Continue reading to learn how to use Share Play or Remote Play to play PS5 games on a PS4.

HOW TO PLAY PS5 GAMES ON PS4 VIA REMOTE PLAY

Although there are certain limitations, Remote Play is a fantastic method to play PS5 games on your PS4 with reasonable ease (outlined below). With Remote Play, your PS5 is streamed to your PS4, effectively letting you operate your PS5 from your PS4.

There are a few things to keep in mind while using Remote Play to play PS5 games on a PS4 console. The PS5 and PS4 must first be linked to the same wireless network. Since Remote Play is essentially streaming, your internet connection will have a big impact on how effectively it functions. To use Remote Play, Sony advises having a fast internet connection with upload and download rates of at least 15 Mbps.

You must use your DualShock 4 controller on the PS4 since the DualSense wireless controller is incompatible with the PS4 platform. As a result, you won’t be able to enjoy DualSense features like adaptive triggers and haptic feedback when playing PS5 titles that make use of these capabilities.

Since you’ll need to login in to the PlayStation Network on both systems, you must have one. Others can join as additional players after a person starts utilising Remote Play. A multiplayer game can have up to three participants, but the session stops when the Remote Play host departs. In multiplayer games, your microphone cannot be used.

Some games do not support Remote Play, including PSVR games (games that need the PlayStation VR or PlayStation Camera) are not compatible with Remote Play. Additionally, PS5 titles cannot be played at 4K resolution on a normal PS4.

While someone else is using Remote Play, Share Play, or Share Screen, or streaming their gameplay, when someone is using the PS5 (connection will be lost), when you’re watching a Blu-ray or DVD, or when you’re using PSVR, you can’t utilise Remote Play.

You won’t be able to utilise Share Screen, Share Play, broadcast your games, play a Blu-ray or DVD, or listen to Spotify music when using Remote Play. Additionally, Sony cautions that “depending on the game or video service, part or all video material may not be viewed on your device.”

How to play PS5 games on PS4 via Remote Play

As was already said, you must first make sure that both your PS4 and PS5 are connected to the same wireless network and have the most recent software updates in order to play PS5 games on your PS4. Inspect your PS5 to make sure it hasn’t been more than 60 days since your previous login (log in if you’re uncertain).

Next, take the following steps to use Remote Play:

  • Turn on your PS5 and log into the account you wish to access games from
  • On your PS5, go to ‘Settings’, ‘System’ and then ‘Remote Play’
  • Select ‘Enable Remote Play’ and select to toggle Remote Play on (the toggle should be on the right-hand side when it’s enabled)
  • Make sure to leave your PS5 on or in rest mode
  • Go to your PS4 and select the ‘PS5 Remote Play’ app from the home screen or under your app menu
  • Select ‘Connect to PS5’ (on this screen you can also hit the ‘Options’ menu to select which resolution you would like to stream in)
  • Your PS4 should then find your PS5 and show you your PS5 home screen, where you can select the PS5 games you wish to play
  • To disconnect from Remote Play, press the PS button on your controller and select disconnect, you’ll be given the option to leave your PS5 on or leave it in Rest Mode – through this Remote Play menu you can also jump between the PS5 and PS4 screen

it’s as simple as that! If you do want friends to join your Remote Play game (in couch co-op) then simply have them turn on their controller, sign in and press the ‘Options’  button on the controller.

HOW TO PLAY PS5 GAMES ON PS4 VIA SHARE PLAY

PlayStation Share Play is an additional method for playing PS5 games on a PS4. With Share Play, you can virtually hand over your controller to a friend so they may play your PS5 games as they watch your screen and participate in your PS5 play session on their PS4. Even if they don’t own the games or a PS5 system themselves, they may still join your multiplayer games.

Share Play has limitations much like Remote Play (outlined below).

Playing PS5 games on a PS4 is a terrific option thanks to Share Play, but there are a few important points to keep in mind first. To begin with, one of you must own a PS4 and the other must own a PS5. You must also be buddies on PSN. One buddy may only be invited at a time to Share Play.

Next, confirm that both of your consoles have the most recent firmware update installed, and that both of you have reliable internet connections (Sony advises a minimum upload speed of 2Mbps).

You might need to repeat your session frequently because Share Play sessions only last 60 minutes. Giving the controller to a guest does need a PS Plus subscription, however only the host has to have a current PS Plus subscription to watch someone else play using Share Play. Both players can play, but only the host can win trophies, hence only the host has to own the game.

The visitor won’t see any other displays or non-game app screens because just your game screen and audio are shared. Additionally, not all games are compatible with Share Play, and some game scenes might not be visible to visitors.

Share a game through Share Play

You can give a buddy control of the PS5 game you’re playing as you watch them play thanks to Sony’s Share Play function. The person with the PS5 should initiate the session since they are the host and the other person is the guest when you begin a Share Play session.

Here are the steps the host needs to take to share a PS5 game to PS4 through Share Play:

  • Set up a party chat with the visitor through the Parties tab (they need to be online)
  • Once the party is created, press the PS button on the DualSense controller, go to ‘Control Centre’ and select the party voice chat card
  • Select ‘Start Share Screen’ then ‘Start Share Play’
  • Select the PS4 owner (visitor) in the voice chat, invite the player and then select the play mode (the visitor needs to accept this invite)
  • This will link your consoles and they should be able to see your screen
  • Select ‘Visitor Plays as You’ play mode from the party voice chat card and they should not be able to take over control of your game
  • Select ‘Share Play Session’ when finished

If you want to share and play a PS5 game’s local multiplayer or co-op mode with a friend, follow the above but instead of selecting the ‘Visitor Plays as You’ play mode, select ‘Play a game with the Visitor’.

Here are the steps the host needs to take to play a PS5 game with a PS4 player through Share Play:

  • Set up a party chat with the visitor through the Parties tab (they need to be online)
  • Once the party is created, press the PS button on the DualSense controller, go to ‘Control Centre’ and select the party voice chat card
  • Select ‘Start Share Screen’ then ‘Start Share Play’
  • Select the PS4 owner (visitor) in the voice chat, invite the player and then select the play mode (the visitor needs to accept this invite)
  • This will link your consoles and they should be able to see your screen
  • Select ‘Play a game with the Visitor’ play mode from the party voice chat card and they should be able to join you in a local co-op game
  • Select ‘Share Play Session’ when finished
