Apple announced during its Wonderlust event earlier this week that iOS 17 will be ready for download on the majority of iPhones on Monday. The new iPhone 15 variants were also displayed by the business.
New iOS features including StandBy mode, the Journal app, and significant Messages modifications will be included. However, some iPhone users with older models won’t be able to access iOS 17’s new features. If you possess an iPhone from 2017 or earlier, that may be you.
If you aren’t sure which iPhone you’ve got, a quick check in your settings can show you. Open your Settings app and tap General > About. Next to Model Name, you’ll see which iPhone you have.
We’ll explain how to determine if iOS 17 will work on your iPhone. Also, see if there’s a newer model on our list of the best iPhones that might be suitable for you. Here is how to place a preorder for the iPhone 15.

Which iPhone models won’t run the new iOS 17?
With the release of iOS 17, there will be three more iPhone models that won’t run Apple’s latest mobile operating system: iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X. Apple stopped providing feature upgrades for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 7 series with the release of iOS 16 last year. Those phones still run iOS 15.
What if your iPhone isn’t on the iOS 17 compatibility list?
You won’t receive a prompt to download iOS 17 if your iPhone isn’t among those listed above because it doesn’t support the latest operating system. For instance, the most recent software you’ll ever be able to use on an iPhone X or iPhone 8 is iOS 16.
The older iPhones should continue to function for a long even though they won’t support the most recent version of iOS or receive any of the new features. Additionally, they will keep getting security updates until iOS 16. In July 2023, Apple issued the most recent iOS 15 security upgrade, and in the near future, it will also provide iOS 16 security patches.
